The Land of Five Rivers "5 abb"
The word "Punjab" is derived from the Persian words: panj and āb. In English it translates to five and water. This Land of Five Rivers is dominated by Jhelum, Chin, Ravi, Bias, and Satluj.
The people of the punjab are called Punjabis. Historically, Punjab was divided into five different regions:
Malwa: comprising Barnals, Bhatinda, Faridkot, Firozpur, Ludhiana, Mansa, Moga, Muktsar, Patiala, Sangrur
Majha: comprising Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran
Doaba: comprising Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Nawan Shahr
Powadh: comprising Ropar, Mohali, Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib.
Currently, the present Punjab is divided into three regions:
Majha: comprising of districts Amritsar, and Gurdaspur. It starts from the right bank of river Beas and stretched upto the Wagha village marking the boundary between the India and the Pakistan.
Doaba: comprising of districts Jalandhar, Nawanshehar, Kapurthala, and Hoshiarpur. It is bounded by the river Sutlej in the south, and Beas in the north.
Malwa: comprising of districts Bathinda, Faridkot, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ferozepur, Ludhiana, Mansa, Moga, Muktsar, Nawanshehar, Patiala, Ropar, Sangrur. It is bounded by the south go the river Sutlej. The Malwais: a clan called Molois, once ruled this area, which have spread upto the present state of Gujrat. Since Mughal times, it has been known as Subah of Malwa.
Punjab has been estimated to be the richest state in India. It is bordered by Pakistan on the west, the Indian states of Jammu & Kashmir on the north, Himachal Pradesh on its northeast and Haryana and Rajasthan to its south.
